They Can Raid His Studio, But Not His Song”: Teddy Afro’s ‘’Etorika’’ and the State Crackdown That Must Stop

Wondwossen Teklu

In seven days, 87 million people listened to ‘’Etorika’’ ኢቶሪካ.
In seven days, Teddy Afro’s spokesperson and vice manager *Mahelet Solomon*, and his longtime friend *Yoseph*, were arrested.
Today, Teddy Afro’s studio was ransacked by the state.

This is no longer just about music. It’s about silencing the most powerful voice in Ethiopia.

The Album That Shook a Nation

On 16 April 2026, Teddy Afro returned after 9 years with ‘’Etorika’’ — 96 minutes, 18 tracks, released direct to YouTube. The response was unprecedented:

– *15 million views in 24 hours* — dubbed the “largest digital music launch in Ethiopian history”
– *87+ million views in 7 days* from Addis Ababa to the global diaspora
– Tracks like ‘’Jember ጄንበር, Das Tal (Ansaw)_ ዳስ ጣል, and Etorika’’ became instant cultural touchstones

Fans said it best: “ኢቶሪካ is not just an album… it’s a conversation.”_ And that conversation terrifies those in power.

The Crackdown: Names, Not Rumors

This week, the retaliation turned concrete:

1. *Mahelet Solomon*, Teddy’s spokesperson and vice manager, was arrested.
2. *Yoseph*, his longtime friend and collaborator, was arrested.
3. *Today, Teddy Afro’s studio was ransacked* by security forces. Equipment seized. Production halted.

This follows a documented pattern. In 2006, after his politically resonant song _Yasteseryal_, Teddy was imprisoned for an alleged hit-and-run. From 2020–2022, his songs _Demo Be Abay_, _Armash_, and _Na’at_ drew official backlash for addressing the Nile dam, the Tigray War, and civilian massacres.

The state’s logic is brutal and simple: when an artist can reach 87 million people in a week, he becomes more than a musician. He becomes a threat.

This Is Not Just Ethiopia’s Problem

The playbook is regional. Across East Africa, governments are raiding studios to mute dissent:

– *Uganda*: Producer Didi was jailed and had all studio equipment confiscated after his music was used in campaigns.
– *Bobi Wine*: Soldiers stormed his Kamwokya studio, arrested employees, and humiliated him on camera.

Silencing the studio is how you silence the street.

Why the World Must Speak Now

_Etorika_ doesn’t call for violence. It calls for memory. For unity. For mourning. _Das Tal (Ansaw)_ grieves. _Jember_ hopes. _Tsion Mushraye_ prays. Together, they created a shared space for 87 million people — a space the state cannot control.

*Arresting Mahelet Solomon and Yoseph won’t delete those 87 million streams. Ransacking a studio won’t erase what people already feel.*

But silence from the international community will be read as permission.

*This Has to Stop*

We call on:

1. *Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, PEN International* — investigate and demand the immediate release of Mahelet Solomon, Yoseph, and any other detained associates.
2. *UNESCO and the AU* — defend artistic freedom as a cornerstone of civil society. _Etorika_ is culture, not crime.
3. *Streaming platforms and global media* — do not let this story be buried. 87 million listeners deserve to know what happens to the artist who spoke for them.
4. *Governments and embassies* — pressure works. In 2009, Teddy was released early for “good conduct.” International scrutiny saves lives.

You can raid a studio. You can jail a manager. You cannot jail a song that 87 million people have already taken into their hearts.

Teddy Afro gave Ethiopia _Etorika_. The world must now give Teddy Afro its voice.
